Moon Maths

There are two ways of displaying moon numbers. This is because originally it was decided to display numbers using the concept similar to that used with braille. A special numeral sign () was used followed by the letters A to J, which stood for the digit. For example, C is for number 3. This system is still used and older Moon readers are probably familiar with it.

However, it was then thought this traditional way of displaying numbers could be too difficult for some new Moon readers, particularly those who may have additional learning difficulties. StaffsMaths was developed which uses a different set of symbols for numbers, as illustrated below:

The font for this set of numbers is sometimes referred to as the Wibble font. It can be downloaded here (see Downloadable Moon Font).

Some embossers do not have the facility to produce StaffsMaths numbers because of the complexity of the design. In these instances the numbers can be produced using heat fusers or the sticky number tiles which are available from the RNIB.
